You may remember the May Flooring Solution post where Emily Gup, one of Pattern Pulp’s intrepid contributors, compiled a long list of themed options. B&B is an innovative concept trade show where the participating brands are preselected and truly representative of what’s next in street and urban wear. This trade show represents a marketing and communication platform for brands, labels and designers from the areas of Denim, Sportswear, Street Fashion, Function Wear and Casual Dressed Up. Twice each year, this “tradeshow for selected brands” brings together both inspiration and business according to the basic principle of “Fun & Profit”. Its early date makes BREAD & BUTTER the kick-off event within the industry.

Boy do I wish I could join the tech savvy troupes in Utah this weekend for Alt Design Summit, but I have prior obligations of the highest priority – a good friend’s wedding here in New York! See the list below- if you can check 3 or more items, you belong at the heart of the snowy action tomorrow!

Not long ago, AnOther Magazine released their Decade of Style issue. Celebrities from all walks of life donned the pages of this monumental influencer edition. Everyone from Santigold to Chloe Sevigny to Carine Roitfeld was photographed in shape-shifting pieces indicative of the past decade. One of the most memorable layouts captured Charlotte Gainsbourg in gem patterned underwear by Vivienne WestWood. Interestingly, the diamonds are framed with smaller diamonds, a trend that’s taken the wedding industry by storm over the past few years.  Mimicing this design, these Sylva & Cie ring stacks remind me of Westwood’s linear print pattern. Be it 2D or 3D, gems are a designer’s best friend, particularly when edgy, beautiful, and styled with precision.

Filled with smiling toasters, teapots, and cupcakes, how can you not fall in love with the playful and upbeat designs of Piktorama (aka Amaranta)? Born and raised in South America, Piktorama spent a majority of her youth in Caracas and her later art making years in Buenos Aires. Currently residing in Miami, Piktorama combines her talents as an illustrator, animator and fine artist. Piktorama’s main inspiration: cupcakes, a delicious treat for any artistic or culinary palate. It’s certainly a recipe for success. Her stimulating artwork is catching the eyes – and taste-buds – of designers and food critics alike as her vibrant designs bring to life one of life’s greatest pleasures. PP:  How would you describe your aesthetic?

PIKTORAMA: Playful and whimsical.

PP:  Describe your collaborations with other artists.

PIKTORAMA: I haven’t had the experience to work with another artist just yet, but it’s something that I’ll do someday. What I have done is to participate in a project where several artists use the same theme to create their own unique work. The result is a body of art with similar topics yet drastically different outcomes. It is really amazing to see and be a part of. I really like that.

PP: Who inspires you?

PIKTORAMA: Love, friendship, music and cupcakes.

PP: How do color and pattern play a role in your work?

PIKTORAMA: These are the most important elements in my work. In almost all my creations I include colors and patterns, if not, textures. I’ve done black and white illustrations too, but is a real challenge for me.

PP: How does your culture and background affect your work?

PIKTORAMA: It doesn’t really affect it because my work is more based on my daily experiences. It depends on what I’ve done that day, what I’ve seen, my sense of humor, so it’s more a day-to-day experience that influences what I put on paper. I usually joke around a lot so that’s why you can find a lot of foolishness and happy characters in my work.

After emerging from the black hole of distraction that is twitter, I can happily justify the past half hour, as a chain of clicks, originating from Julia Rothman, lead me to the Italian graphic designer, Elena Giavaldi. Her work is wonderful – sharp, crisp and interesting with quirky variety throughout. Giavaldi’s latest project, One Day, One Pattern couldn’t be more appropriate for Pattern Pulp, and reminds me a bit of Jessica Hische‘s Daily Drop Cap Project. So much regularly scheduled art to look forward to, very exciting for those seeking to be inspired!

When’s the last time your neckline stole the show? Be it a formal affair or a casual day at work, it seems as though women are opting for the boldest jewelry they can find. The floating necklace from yesteryear is nothing but a dainty memory as these statement pieces take a front seat. Be it a high-end Fenton jumble, a bugle-beaded grosgrain ribbon, barbed-wire metallics or enlarged romantic charms, designers are pulling out all the stops and giving women a reason to shop.

These mixed media accessories are carefully crafted using unconventional materials such as painted shells, leather, lace, feather, rope, glass, zippers, fabric, mesh, stones, polymer clay and wood. Just as chefs use their leftovers for next day’s specials, these masterpieces have a crafty homemade appeal that are true attention grabbers. Michelle Obama’s already jumped on the bandwagon, so why be shy? It seems like fun to resemble a 3D Rauschenberg.
